Maori King welcomes ethnic communities to Turangawaewae

In an historic event, the Maori King Tuheitia, has invited representatives from ethnic communities to a special powhiri during the 5th Koroneihana (Coronation) celebration at Turangawaewae marae in the Waikato on Friday (19 August).

Race Relations Commissioner Joris de Bres said the powhiri was a significant and historic occasion. “This is the first time that a special welcome has been held by the King to recognise the diversity of New Zealand society. I applaud the invitation which is a wonderful gesture and also gracious acknowledgement of the many communities that make up New Zealand today.”

There will also be a welcome for members of the Muslim community on Saturday morning.

Mr de Bres said that there had been strong interest from ethnic community representatives in both Auckland and Hamilton, including members of the Auckland Council Ethnic Advisory Board, the New Zealand Chinese Association, Police ethnic liaison officers,  and many others. A large turnout was expected.

The Koroneihana celebrations mark the fifth anniversary of the coronation of of Kiingi Tuheitia, the seventh Maori monarch at Ngaruawahia on 21 August 2006. The eldest son of the late Queen Te Arikinui Dame Te Atairangikaahu and Whatumoana Paki, will greet and speak with ethnic community representatives at the powhiri. Later in the day Kiingi Tuheitia will welcome representatives of the Government.

The powhiri heralds the arrival of the 2011 New Zealand Diversity Forum in Hamilton. Now in its seventh year the Diversity Forum explores and discussed practical action on a range of topical diversity issues from heritage languages, the place of religion, discrimination and settlement issues. The main programme runs from Sunday 21- Monday 22 August at the Claudelands Convention Centre.

The Diversity Forum concludes with the presentation of the annual New Zealand Diversity Awards. The awards recognise projects and initiations undertaken by organisations that have made a difference in understanding diversity.
