Submission to Ministerial Inquiry into Foreign Charter Vessels
The Commission’s submission to the Ministerial Inquiry into Foreign Charter Vessels strongly supported fair and decent conditions for the crews of foreign charter vessels. This was important to protect New Zealand’s international human rights reputation. Among other recommendations the Commission asked the Inquiry to consider promoting the use of the Ruggie Principles on business and human rights adopted by the UN General Assembly this year. The principles outline the responsibilities of the state and business to respect and avoid infringing upon the human rights of others and for victims to have access to effective remedies.
The Commission’s recommendations were informed by discussions with the National Human Rights Commission of Korea, the Indonesian National Commission on Human Rights and the Chair of the ASEAN Intergovernmental Human Rights Commission. The international Commissions and the New Zealand Human Rights Commission will continue to monitor the outcomes of the Inquiry.
