新年快乐！Happy New Year! 新年快樂！

Race Relations Commissioner Joris de Bres wishes all New Zealanders a happy and prosperous Year of the Dragon, especially those Asian New Zealanders for whom it is particularly significant.

The lunar New Year commences on 23 January with the Year of the Dragon welcomed in and celebrated around the world.

Mr de Bres says, “The lunar New Year is celebrated more and more throughout the country. Asian New Zealanders make-up about ten per cent of New Zealand’s total population and nearly 20 per cent of Aucklanders. As these communities grow, they contribute positively to both our economic and cultural landscape.”

A particularly auspicious sign in the lunar calendar, the dragon symbolises good fortune, happiness, power and strength.

The lunar New Year is one of the first in a series of significant national events, leading up to Waitangi Day on 6 February and Race Relations Day on 21 March.
