A recent tragedy in America has stirred a powerful call to respect women’s rights and it’s about time.

Elliot Rodger, the perpetrator of the female-centered murders, frequented of ‘Men’s Rights’ forums, and was recorded in a YouTube video saying:

“I don’t know why you girls have never been attracted to me, but I will punish you all for it. It’s an injustice, a crime, because I don’t know what you don’t see in me. I’m the perfect guy, and yet you throw yourselves at all these obnoxious men, instead of me, the supreme gentleman.”

In response, women around the US have headed to social media to stand up for their rights – and they should.

Women need to get really, really angry. Enough is enough.

I heard the United Nations Special Rappatoeur on violence when I attended the Commission on the Status of Women in New York earlier this year.

She said violence against women (VAW) was a global epidemic and if it was a disease, a state of emergency would have been declared by now.

The death of a woman was the ultimate act of violence.

There is nothing new about VAW. Women and children have been paying with their lives for eons.

It is driven by gender inequality. Violence is a way for men to gain power and control.

In these instances it seems like women are valued less than men and I’ve heard all sorts of bs excuses for this behaviour – alcohol, poverty, stress, cultural  to name a few.

Just  last year when New Zealander Denise Ritchie from Stop Demand spoke out against the group Odd Future, well known for their hateful lyrics against women, who were going to play at a rate payer funded concert she got the most vile comments on Facebook.

She comment that:

“The extent of vitriol and hatred being directed to me is interesting – many are using words and phrases that look to have been pulled right out of Odd Future’s ‘s lyrics (eg “suck my dick bitch”, ”I hope you get raped and murdered and f**king die a horrible death you whore”). It only confirms that Odd Future does influence its fans in real life. Cross a bloke and they respond with words around sexual violence.”

We have good laws in New Zealand against domestic violence and sexual assault. That hasn’t stopped our out of control stats.

What we need urgently are multiple strategies that range from prevention and education of our youth in what respectful and healthy relationships are, financial empowerment of women through fair pay and education, to women having control over their bodies with access to all forms of contraception and sexual health services.

We need our boys and men to be role models and champions.

We need friends and bystanders to call out abuse of any kind when they witness it.

Everyone has a right to be safe and free from violence. It  is a human right.
