Ethnic or national origins cover your place/country of birth, your nationality and citizenship.
What does the Human Rights Act say about ethnic or national origins?
It is unlawful to discriminate on the ground of ethnic or national origins in any of the prohibited areas of public life.
Exceptions
There are a number of circumstances where it is not unlawful to discriminate on the grounds of ethnic or national origins. These include:
In employment (includes pre-employment and advertising):
- crew of non-New Zealand ships and aircraft
- work involving national security
- counselling on personal matters.
In goods and services:
- courses and counselling on personal matters.
In accommodation:
- shared residential accommodation.
