Joy Liddicoat worked for sixteen years as a lawyer across the public, private and community sectors. Specialising in human rights law, with particular emphasis on violence against women and children, she is also an expert in constitutional and public law.

Community participation includes working with community law centres, women’s organisations (including the National Council of Women, YWCA and women’s refuges), and lesbian and gay organisations.

She was appointed to the Commission on 1 May 2002 and reappointed for a further four years on 21 June 2007. Ms Liddicoat resigned from the Commission in December 2010 to return full-time to her boutique legal practice which specialises in human rights education and training both in New Zealand and overseas.
