Mediator, Enquiries & Complaints Team

Fixed term to 31 May 2013, part time (20 hours per week)
Wellington (preferred, but negotiable)

The Commission is seeking an experienced Mediator on a fixed term basis to cover a period of extended leave.  The team’s purpose is to provide a disputes resolution service for enquiries and complaints of unlawful discrimination and other human rights matters made to the Human Rights Commission.

Duties include:

  • analyse and categorise complaints to the Commission
  • resolve disputes in accordance with the legislative requirements and best practice
  • educate key audiences on the disputes resolution function
  • provide information and case studies for use in the wider Commission support other parts of the HRC to address broader human rights issues
  • participate in Enquiries & Complaints specific projects and programmes.

Person specificatino and position competencies:

  • a relevant University degree or equivalent experience
  • awareness of the theories and conceptual underpinnings of mediation and dispute resolution; demonstrated effective application of modern dispute resolution skills
  • an understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, Te Reo Māori me ona tikanga with proficiency to conduct dispute resolution processes using Te Reo Māori is desirable
    a recognised mediation qualification is desirable
  • in-depth knowledge of human rights, race relations, EEO or equivalent social/justice areas.  Experience in any of the Commission’s current priorities as set out in the Statement of Intent is desirable
  • an understanding of and an ability to effectively operate in, the dynamic and challenging political environment in which the Commission operates
    knowledge of the functions of various government and non-governmental agencies for referral purposes
  • effective use of communication skills to establish and maintain trust, elicit relevant information, articulate it appropriately, record it clearly and accurately while maintaining impartiality, confidentiality and a high standard of report writing
  • competence in analysis and judgement demonstrated by ability to break down complex information to identify key aspects, causal factors and links between different sources of information.
