National human rights institutions
National human rights institutions (NHRIs) like the New Zealand Human Rights Commission have a unique role at the United Nations. They are independent of governments and separate from non-governmental organisations. United Nations and other international agencies are increasingly looking to NHRIs to provide authoritative human rights advice to better monitor the progress countries make towards the realisation of human rights. The New Zealand Human Rights Commission has an A accreditation.
Chief Commissioner Rosslyn Noonan is the chair of the International Coordinating Committee (ICC), an international organisation which coordinates the accreditation and support of National Human Rights Institutions.
