The Statement on Religious Diversity was launched two years ago after extensive public discussion and consultation. The cover of the published booklet indicated that the statement would be reviewed in time for the Diversity Forum in August 2009.
The booklet cover also invited faith communities and other organisations to endorse the statement and to provide suggestions for future amendment. Ten thousand copies have been distributed.
Since then, many organisations have endorsed the statement, and most recently it has been published in the New Zealand Police’s guide to religious diversity. There have been very few suggestions for amendment, other than those received at the time of initial publication. Professor Paul Morris of Victoria University will be conducting the review, but has indicated that in light of the widespread distribution and endorsement of the statement, the focus of the review will be on the commentary, picking up points that have been made and increasing its usefulness as a handbook in the same way as the Race Relations Statement. If you have any comments you would like Professor Morris to consider in his review of the entire booklet, please email them to email@example.com by May 31.
