World Refugee Day 2012

First marked in 2001, World Refugee Day is held every year on June 20. This year, the UNHCR theme is “One refugee without hope is too many.”

World Refugee Day 2012

The annual commemoration is marked by a variety of events in more than 100 countries.

Activities and Events:

National

A Day of Prayer for Refugees and Migrants is set aside each year to fall as close as possible to World Refugee Day on 20 June. In 2012, the Day of Prayer for Refugees and Migrants falls on Sunday 17 June.

Caritas prepares resources for this Day on behalf of the New Zealand Catholic Bishops Conference. To download full notes and resources for the Day of Prayer, please visit the Caritas website .

Open Day at the Mangere Refugee Resettlement Centre

When: Saturday, 23 June 11am to 2pm.

Annual World Refugee Day Football Match and Cultural Fair

When: Sunday, 24 June at 11.00am
Where: Newtown Park

 Movie screening to benefit Refugee Services

When: Wednesday 20 June at 6.00pm
Where: Lighthouse Cinema, 52 Beach Street, Petone
Movie:  “A Welldigger’s Daughter”
Cost: $20 for a ticket AND a delicious cupcake from SweetPea. Raffle tickets will be available at the event!

Refuge in words – hear 5 former refugees read their poems of love and survival
