New Zealand Diversity Forum

The 2013 New Zealand Diversity Forum was held on 26 August in Wellington. The theme of the Forum was “My Dream for Aotearoa New Zealand…” which was a continuation of this year’s Race Relations Day theme this connects with the Government’s Constitutional Review process. Held across three venues, Te Papa, Te Wharewaka and Museum of Wellington City & Sea, the event was well attended.Event image 31 250x126 New Zealand Diversity Forum

The New Zealand Diversity Forum commenced with the National Youth Forum on Cultural Diversity on Friday evening with an inspiring powhiri from Mana Whenua at Pipitea Marae. During the next days the youth engaged, discussed and planned the key issues relating to race relations and human rights. The Plenary Forum followed on Monday with a number of special topic sessions focused on key race relations issues.

The New Zealand Diversity Forum concluded with the New Zealand Diversity Awards.

For 2013 nine organisations which made outstanding contributions to the New Zealand Diversity Action Programme were recognised at the annual Awards. This year’s winners included: Araiteuru Marae, Community and Public Health – Canterbury District Health Board, ETHKICK13 Committee, New Zealand Catholic Bishops Committee for Interfaith Relations, New Zealand Federation of Historical Societies, Refugee Trauma Recovery Te Roopu Awhina o Wairoa, Voices Arts Trust and The Peace Foundation.

2013 NZ Diversity Awards

For the special topic forums there were over 15 organisations presenting sessions on a range of topics, from religion and the media, inequalities in health and criminal justice, to rangatiratanga and the whakapapa of human rights. The presentations are being collected so you can view some of the presentations online. Presentations from the sessions can be accessed at this link.

Principal partners in this year’s forum were the Human Rights Commission, the NZ Police, the NZ National Commission for UNESCO, Globug and the MSD Settling In Programme.

The New Zealand Diversity Forum is part of the community-initiated New Zealand Diversity Action Programme which the Human Rights Commission facilitates. The objectives of this Programme are to recognise and celebrate the cultural diversity of our society; promote the equal enjoyment by everyone of their civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights, regardless of race, colour, religion, ethnicity or national origin; foster harmonious relations between diverse peoples; and fulfil the promise of  the Treaty of Waitangi.
