The purpose of the Aoraki Multicultural Council (formerly known as the Timaru Ethnic Council) is to promote unity and understanding between those of all ethnic backgrounds and to support new migrants to Timaru.

Race Relations Day

This year the Council will hold an Intrnational Earthquake Concert on 26 March. If any of you would like to take part in this special occasion either as a singer, dancer or musician please contact Kate Elsen on 688 6064 ( or if you know of any  one who might like to perform please let Kate Elsen know).

Entry will be $2.00 minimum per head by donations at  the  door  this  year there is  no  need  to buy  a  ticket anywhere.

Monthly Meetings

We hold meetings on the first Friday of every month @ Charmers Friendship Centre with a guest speaker or musical / dance performance, which is followed by a pot luck meal. These regular meetings are well supported and enjoyed by many newcomers and older friends alike.

South Canterbury International Festival

Aoraki Multicultural Council, in collaboration with Aoraki Polytechnic, the South Canterbury International Festival, which will be held at Aoraki Polytechnic, date still to be confirmed. This new event will show case cultural ‘houses’, including Germany, India, Iran, Japan, Philippines, South Africa, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, the UK and the USA. Each cultural house is organised and run by members of the community, including students from secondary schools across the region.

There will be a range of interactive displays of clothing, art, crafts, food and music. A number of exhibitors, such as English Language Partners and Settlers Museum, have been selected because of their involvement and support for cultural diversity in the community. Performances will be held both indoors and outdoors on the day.

Diwali 2011

The Indian community of Timaru will celebrate the festival of lights, inviting the whole community to participate, date still to be confirmed.
