Auckland Refugee Coalition

Auckland Refugee Coalition brings together refugee leaders/representatives from ethnically diverse backgrounds in Auckland to discuss and advocate on settlement needs of their respective communities.

The coalition’s vision is to advocate refugee community voices and promote sustainable integrated refugee resettlement programmes.

Objectives:

  • To represent refugee voices in local and national forums related to refugee resettlement and long term community development in New Zealand.
  • To establish a refugee community engagement framework from grassroots to regional level.
  • To promote regular inter-community group meetings to identify and reflect key settlement issues and address to the appropriate local agencies.
  • To unite and strengthen refugee community actions to improve social economic statues.
  • To empower refugee communities, develop new skill to gain confidence and integrate into their new country.
  • To involve in community consultation and actively participate and contribute to national refugee resettlement forums.
  • To advise agencies and organisations both NGO and government departments on best practice for service provision to refugee communities.
  • To monitor outcomes for refugee communities and advocate for the improvement of services provided to refugee communities within the region.

 Projects 2011
World Refugee Day 

Auckland Refugee Family Trust is having a Fundraising Dinner Saturday 18 June at 7pm. The dinner will be prepared by the Auckland Refugee Community Coalition celebrating the first anniversary of the Trust, World Refugee Day and the 60th Anniversary of the signing of the UNHCR Geneva Convention.

Regional Refugee Resettlement

The Refugee Coalition worked alongside Refugee Services to organise the annual Auckland Regional Refugee Resettlement Forum.

The forum brings together representatives of former refugee communities, local and central government and refugee-sector NGOs to discuss key issues and initiatives that are impacting on successful refugee resettlement within their region

Workshops and monthly meetings

The Refugee Coalition will continue to run capacity building work shop for community leaders and hold monthly meetings where representatives from various government agencies are invited to speak.

RYAN

Auckland Refugee Coalition is engaged in a collaborative venture involving Refugees As Survivors, the Umma Trust, Ethnic Youth Trust, Ministry of Social Development, ASB Community Trust, and refugee advocacy groups to establish the RYAN (Refugee Youth Action Network) initiative. The initiative involves applying a community development approach in fostering and mentoring young leaders form refugee backgrounds.
