Centre for Asian and Ethnic Minority Health Research (CAHRE)

The Centre for Asian and Ethnic Minority Health Research (CAHRE), a research unit at the University of Auckland, is based at the School of Population Health (SoPH) in the Tāmaki Innovation Campus. CAHRE conducts research and organises workshops, seminars, symposia and international conferences to promote the health and wellbeing of Asian and other Ethnic minority peoples, including Middle Eastern, Latin American and African, by identifying and increasing understanding of their health needs. The centre has a strong focus on the current health issues of Asian and other Ethnic Minority communities in New Zealand, and seeks to develop strategic ways to improve and visualise the health status of this fast growing population. It also values partnerships with other national and international research academics to further its goals. They include:

  • to establish a centre of national and international excellence in understanding health issues affecting Asian and other Ethnic Minority communities
  • to cultivate an inter-disciplinary approach to studying Asian and other Ethnic Minority health
  • to provide research-based information to enhance the capacity of health services in delivering effective and culturally appropriate interventions
  • to conduct research that can foster health amongst Asians and other Ethnic Minorities in New Zealand
  • to collaborate with Asian and other Ethnic Minority communities, business, local government, and ministries to further research in the areas of Asian and other Ethnic Minority health
  • to build a new focal point of exchange on Asian and other Ethnic Minority health with both the local and international research communities
  • to disseminate and analyse the outcomes of relevant Asian and other Ethnic Minority health research.

Our aim is to provide culturally appropriate information for health professionals and government agencies.

Project 2011
Launch of the Centre for Asian and Ethnic Minority Health Research

In October Hon Tariana Turia, Associate Minister of Health, launched the Centre for Asian and Ethnic Minority Health Research to mark the rebranding of the centre (formerly known as the Centre for Asian Health Research and Evaluation).  The change was made to reflect the expansion of the Centre’s focus to include other Ethnic Minorities.
