Project 2011
Global 7s Cricket Tournament
This tournament was held in Christchurch at Hagley Park on Sunday 16th and 23th January with twelve teams competing. Each team comprised of seven players and each game was seven overs a side. The teams were made up of players hailing from different parts of the world such as Afghanistan, England, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, including New Zealand.
Deputy Mayor Ngaire Button opened the tournament and highlighted the values of the vast cultural diversity in Christchurch region. She was joined by Cr Yani Johanson and MP Brendon Burns.
Dr Surinder Tandon, President of the Christchurch Multicultural Council, says the objective of having fun, while establishing inter-community friendship and harmony, was fully achieved.
This tournament was supported by the Christchurch City Council, and a number of Christchurch businesses (SBS Bank, Ray White Hornby, Stirling Sports Riccarton, Cricket Express, Hungry Wok, The Trophy Shop, Little India, Tandoori Palace).
Councillor Jimmy Chen, being himself a migrant from Taiwan and a keen promoter of multicultural relations, stressed the importance of ethnic events being organised by the Christchurch Multicultural Council. He said the City Council was always pleased to be associated with such events. He awarded the prizes and medals to the winners. Special thanks to Umesh Easwarapadcham for convening the tournament.
