Projects  2011
Language learning for deaf pre-literate refugees

This is a collaborative project with Deaf Aotearoa, CCS Disability Action and Christchurch Resettlement Services, to ensure the provision of service for deaf pre-literate refugees in order to:

  • Learn NZSL
  • Learn English
  • Integrate into and engage with the community in Christchurch

These learners are currently marginalised due to a lack of funding and understanding of their needs.

Updates February 2011
We now have a trained NZ Sign Language tutor for these learners, thanks to help from MP Nicky Wagner, Christchurch Resettlement Services, Deaf Aotearoa, Department of Labour, and Ministry of Social Development.

We are also currently working on providing a deaf interpreter on our May – July Home Tutor Training Course to enable deaf volunteers to train to teach NZ Sign Language to deaf refugees. This project is in collaboration with Deaf Aotearoa who is helping us find suitable volunteers and funding for a deaf interpreter.
