Hakatere Marae – a place to call home

To be fully self-sufficient and to have social, health educational services for Maori run by Maori. To offer visitors to the area a chance to take part in activities at the Marae. For the Marae to be a living breathing entity that is here for the service of those here today and those in the future. Somewhere to belong for the entire Mid Canterbury Community a place to call “home”. Many community events are held at the marae throughout the year.

            Hakatere Marae Development 2010-2012

Hakatere marae is to get $10,000 per year for three years from the Ministry of Health to develop a garden on half an acre of spare land.

The Hakatere marae is growing the garden as a way to strengthen its links to the wider community.

Produce will go to the marae and a local food bank.

Marae chair Michelle Brett says rangatahi will be trained in horticulture and a new kitchen at the marae will be used to run cooking courses.
