Human Rights in Education | Mana Tika Tangata

More a general approach than a specific programme, Human Rights in Education is a broad collaborative initiative to meet New Zealand’s treaty commitments to human rights-based education, including:

  • Realising the right to education of every young person (based on the development and implementation of professional best practice).
  • Respecting the dignity and rights of all in the learning community.
  • Enabling young peoples’ effective participation and contribution in communities in and beyond the school (local-to-global citizenship) based on the exercise of human rights and responsibilities.

Use of the human rights framework in education develops respect for our common and diverse humanity, contributing to more harmonious communities. The initiative is supported by a range of organisations, and facilitated by the Human Rights in Education Trust.

Project 2011
Third implementation year

2009 was the first full year in which a small number of schools participated in Human Rights in Education, providing invaluable experience in how human rights-based education may develop in New Zealand.

In 2011 the Facilitation Team intends to introduce the Initiative to a much wider audience of schools, early childhood education centres and other stakeholders in education
