Hutt City Council

The Hutt City Council is the second largest city in the Wellington Region and borders onto the capital city Wellington. The population is about 98,000, of which almost 17 percent are Māori, 12 percent are Pacific Islanders and 11 percent are of other ethnicities. The Hutt region has a long history of hosting the settlement of migrants and refugees.

Race Unity Day

Race Unity Day is a celebration of Race Relations Day. This event is co-hosted with the Hutt Multi-Ethnic Council. This builds on the Council’s long term involvement in supporting this event and engaging with communities. There will be performances from cultural groups and a variety of food will be available.

Settlement Support Hutt Valley

The Hutt region has a long history of hosting the settlement of migrants and refugees. The Hutt City Council is the lead agency responsible for delivering settlement support services in the Hutt Valley. Settlement Support connects migrants with information and services available to support their settlement. Hutt Settlement Support will run orientation workshops and information sessions for new settlers living in the Hutt Valley, and networking meetings and workshops for service providers. Kapa Haka Group

The Hutt City Council has a kapa haka group. There is good participation from staff across the Council. They practice waiata every week and learn about various aspects of tikanga Māori. They provide performances at a range of Council and community driven events. The group support each other as a family and are a very diverse bunch of people from within council plus a few community people (ex council staff) who remain as members and come to practice every week.
