Projects 2011
Race Unity Speech Awards
The New Zealand Police is a key partner of the Race Unity Speech Awards. The NZ Police has been involved since the Awards were established and became a sponsor in 2008. The partnership with the organisers and the other agencies involved are one of the many initiatives managed by police’s Maori, Pacific and Ethnic Services (MPES) team. A key action of the ethnic responsiveness strategy is to promote a more inclusive society.
The Awards provides a great opportunity to give young people in New Zealand the opportunity to spread the unity message of positive race relations. They will be the ones to unite communities through the promotion of education and moral excellence. The celebration of diversity allows students to develop the necessary skills to lead successful and productive lives.
New Zealand Communities Football Cup
The New Zealand Communities Football Cup is an event organised by the NZ Police. It is the national tournament for the regional winners of ethnic or multi-cultural football events held in the 12 months leading up to the national tournament. The national tournament is the culmination of more than 500 games of regional football. Although regional ethnic football events have been held by local councils and ethnic organisations for some years, the NZCFC offers the opportunity for regional winner’s community-based teams to compete against one another at a national level.
The event was first held in Wellington in 2008. It was established to contribute practically towards the vision of ‘Safer Communities Together’, provide an opportunity for positive interaction amongst ethnic communities and a desire to use football to help drive positive social change.
Auckland will play host to the fourth annual New Zealand Communities Football Cup (NZCFC) on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 November 2011. The tournament will be held at the Auckland council owned and managed Wellesley Community Centre, 740 Sandringham Road extension, Mt Roskill.
The tournament will support White Ribbon Day and its objectives and is officially held in partnership with the Auckland Council and supported by the Human Rights Commission, Families Commission, Auckland Football and and Oceania Football. All players will wear white ribbons during the tournament and key messaging with regards to family violence will be communicated during the event.
Regions that will be represented at the tournament include, Auckland, Hamilton, Tauranga, Rotorua, Palmerston North, Upper Hutt, Wellington City, Nelson and Christchurch.
Acknowledging Muslim Male Leaders
Settling In in collaboration with Auckland Council and NZ Police will host an event to acknowledge Muslim Male leaders on 4 November in Auckland. The event builds on Ratna Osman’s (Sisters In Islam) visit to New Zealand earlier in July which focused on Muslim Women’s Rights As Human Rights. There are a number of Muslim male community leaders, mostly from refugee background, who have been working tirelessly to advocate for rights of Muslim women in the area of family violence in the wider Muslim/NZ community. These men continue to support Muslim women who are at the fore front of providing services for family violence and social issues, youth initiatives, awareness raising and advocacy for Muslim women rights. The event is to be held during Islam Awareness Week. Please RSVP to Wells Albert.
