Tai Tokerau Human Rights Network

The Tai Tokerau Human Rights Network grew out of Taku Manawa My Human Rights which is a project aimed at increasing human rights capacity and capability in communities. The network is made up of a number of organisations and aims to increase the ability of people in those communities to monitor human rights violations and advocate more effectively for the realisation of human rights that impact on them.
Network members frequently advocate on behalf of individuals and groups where race relations and human rights are an issue, run human rights education activities, coordinate key human rights events such as Race Relations Day, Human Rights Day, White Ribbon Day and Waitangi Day.

The network also acts as a link between the Human Rights Commission and communities disseminating human rights and race relations information both ways.

Projects 2011
Women’s Self-Empowerment Programme

This programme of eight two-hour sessions is part of the Domestic Violence Programme in Whangarei. Using a human rights approach it focuses on women learning how to empower themselves through increased knowledge of human rights combined with increased self worth. “I want women to go from being a victim to being a survivor. It’s changing that mindset.”
Women learn that they have the ability to take control of their situation.

Conversations on Human Rights – Exhibition

This Exhibition presents 30 photographs each a visual representation of one article of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. All the photos were taken in the Northland area. The exhibition has been travelling throughout the year in the Northland area, will be part of the NZ Diversity Forum and will travel to Southland in October hosted by the Murihiku Southland Human Rights Network.

Wherever the exhibition is held people have the opportunity to comment using post-it notes. Workshops and presentations by local community organisations also run alongside the exhibition as well as facilitated conversations with those visiting the exhibition.
