Settlement Support New Zealand Initiative in New Plymouth

To accommodate the increasing number of migrants and refugees arriving in the region, a ‘Settlement Support’ initiative was established in New Plymouth in May 2006. The Department of Labour is responsible for leading this initiative and supports Goal 3 of the New Zealand Settlement Strategy that migrants and refugees are able to access local information and responsive services that support their settlement. This initiative is funded by the Department of and piloted by the lead agency, Taranaki Employment Support Foundation.

The service is situated within the New Plymouth District Council’s Community Development centre in Top Town Complex in the Central Business District of New Plymouth.

Settlement Support New Plymouth is a clear point of contact for migrants, refugees and their families who make New Plymouth their home. This new initiative will help them to overcome the challenges in a new country and successfully settle where they chose to live in Taranaki region. Our centre provides friendly Information Support, Referral, Co-ordination and Orientation for them and their families to easily integrate into the community.

The co-ordinator manages this project with support from a Settlement Network linking together government, non-government agencies and community groups. We also work with mainstream providers in our region to offer more responsive services and network with a wide range of community organisations to strengthen the co-ordination of settlement services.
