Te Taurahere-O-Ngāpuhi-Ki-Te-Tonga-O-Tāmaki Makaurau

“Te Taurahere O Ngāpuhi Ki Te Tonga O Tāmaki Makaurau” is the Ngāpuhi iwi organisation which provides a collective voice for the Ngāpuhi people living in the region of Manukau/South Auckland. The taurahere organisation was established as an avenue for Ngāpuhi to maintain connections with their turangawaewae in Taitokerau/Northland – whilst living in the Manukau region.

The taurahere acknowledges that the profile of Ngāpuhi is changing and now has a very diverse ‘face’ compared to how the iwi looked even 20 years ago. Intermarriage has now become common not just between iwi but also between race and culture. This has led to Ngāpuhi mokopuna (grandchildren) now representing all different backgrounds and living diverse lives among their whanau.

Project 2011
Ngāpuhi Festival Ki Tāmaki

This festival is run bi-annually by Te Taurahere-O-Ngāpuhi-Ki-Te-Tonga-O-Tāmaki Makaurau and this year it will be held at Sir Barry Curtis Park in Manukau on Saturday 05 March 2011. This will be the third time that this project will be held, the first being in 2007 at the Telstra Event Centre and Manukau and in 2009 it was held at the Waitākere Trusts Stadium.

The purpose of the Festival is to give an opportunity for those Ngāpuhi living in Tāmaki Makaurau to get to know their roots. This also offers the opportunity to others within the community to forge relationships with Ngāpuhi. Ngāpuhi is the biggest Iwi by far with a 60% concentration of its population based in Tāmaki. The theme for this year\’s festival is getting to know Ngāpuhi and its diversity.
