Projects 2011
Positive promotion of Tamizh language and South Indian culture in Wellington

WMS is committed to:

  • promoting Tamizh language and South Indian culture
  • organising social and sporting events for youth
  • conducting debates and discussions (internal and inter-communal)
  • being involved in community services
  • interacting with other cultural groups
  • contributing to other main-stream multiethnic activities that promote Tamizh
  • share the resources that the group has with other communities.

WMS will remain strictly non-political and non-partisan in the promotion of Tamizh language and South Indian culture. It also hopes to provide support and networking for new migrants and New Zealanders of South Indian origin (then Indiyar). It aims to promote the inclusion of non-Tamizh speaking people who are interested in learning, promoting and celebrating the Tamizh language and South Indian culture. It also aims to promote gender equality amongst members through participation in the community activities.

Tamil New Year Celebration

WMS hosts the annual Tamil New Year celebration in Wellington.  The Tamil Year is around the 14 April and around that time the WMS organise an event. For 2010 an event was held in Linden which included a cultural performance and a vegetarian dinner. For 2011, the event is deferred.
