West Coast Migrant Services ‘New Coasters’ was formed to help newcomers settle into the community and support them as they begin their new lives. This can be in the form of introductions, provision of resources and information and also by promoting the multi cultural aspects of our community.

Diversity Dinner 2011

New Coasters is holding a “Diversity Dinner” on 9 April in order to celebrate Race Relations Day 2011 and is working towards establishing this as an annual event. More details will be available closer the time.

Venue: Ashley Hotel, Greymouth.

Tips for migrants

New Coasters is continuing to research the 4 West Coast areas; Westland, Grey District, Buller and Reefton and produce an information booklet to assist new migrants to the Coast. This booklet will be launched in 2011.

Trades directory

Finding trades people you can trust is hard when you come to a new place. New Coasters is currently developing a directory of reputable workers who will have signed a contract to provide honest advice and fair charges to newcomers. We plan to hold letters of recommendation and provide the trades people with access to the New Coasters logo so they can be easily identified.

Social event for ‘newcoasters’

New Coasters will be welcoming professionals and their families who have newly arrived, by hosting a dinner. Date and venue TBA

Staff development

New Coasters’ staff will be undertaking Intercultural Awareness and Communication Training (IAC) offered by the Office of Ethnic Affairs, with a view to being able to deliver such training in the future.

Social English classes

New Coasters offers English classes to migrants which explain the every day, social use of language such as kiwi colloquialisms and slang, as well as cultural behaviours and practices. This programme is funded by Development West Coast and classes run in 10 week blocks. Classes run on a Saturday afternoon for about 2 hours.
