Russian Cultural Centre Trust (Christchurch)
Established as a Charitable Trust in 2000 the early focus of the Centre was to provide much needed support service for the Russian speaking people living in Christchurch and surrounding area.
The activities of the Centre have expanded to now cover the operation of the pre-school and the Russian school, English classes for adult learners, Health & Aging project, Youth Theatre project and a widening programme of cultural events. It is the only organisation of its kind in the South Island.
Projects 2012
Russian pre-school and school programme
The purpose of the Language school project is to prevent mother language loss among Russian speaking immigrant children. The goal of The Prevention of Mother Language Loss Project is:
- to encourage Russian immigrant’s children to develop their speaking, reading and writing skills in mother language;
- to introduce to them Russian culture.
ESOL with bilingual teacher
The English language project (ESOL with bilingual teacher) was designed to provide English language classes as well as the study of New Zealand culture and customs.
Health & Ageing project
The Health and Aging project aims to promote healthy ageing in later life stages (50 year and older). The goal of this project is to enhance the ability of community to identify and implement effective programmes to promote a better life for elderly.
Youth Art & Theatre Project
The goal of the Youth Art& Theatre Project is to use participation in the arts to teach and encourage youth in service to their community; to offer them a vision of a future in multiple aspects of the arts; to teach them community service; and to provide education and entertainment to the community. Young participants learn civic responsibility while engaging in the arts. They learn to approach community members and organizations to learn their needs and assets; to tailor programming to reflect community needs; to gain understanding of the importance of leadership skills; and how to bond with team members to accomplish goals. The Trust is offering a number of activities, such as “History of Art” programme, Art & craft classes; organize performances and productions, exhibitions and lectures.
Our heritage programme
The goal of “Our heritage” programme is to engage, collaborate and work with the community to celebrate the Russian history and culture.

- Russian language for speakers of other languages programme was created for people, who want to learn Russian as a second language.
