Small World Books

Small World Books website is dedicated to international children’s literature, in particular multilingual nursery rhymes from around the world.

My Village, Rhymes from Around the World was published by Gecko Press in NZ and Australia as well as by Frances Lincoln in the UK and USA. It’s a collection of nursery verses from 22 different countries for young children, and the website was launched to support the book. It went on to win a White Raven award and two new books of international rhymes will be published worldwide by an American publisher in 2012.

The website aims to showcase nursery rhymes from around the world. The rhymes are organised into broad geographical areas: Europe, Asia, Americas, Pacific, Africa, and then categorised by country of origin. Nursery rhymes are printed in either English or the original language, or both, and Small World books are keen to hear from people who know the English or original versions of the verses that are featured, and any other verses that are known.

Reading Around the World Workshops

Small World Books offer Schools, Libraries and Bookshops the opportunity to engage children in “Reading Around the World Workshops”.

The aim is to bring books from around the world into Kiwi kid’s hands and minds – stimulating their imaginations, providing creative opportunities and generating cross-cultural awareness and debate.

The Small World workshops are about giving children the opportunity to experience and explore books from around the world.

The series of self-contained workshops will involve and enthuse children and young people (and the professionals who work with them) about books from other countries and provide an exciting and highly interactive forum for children to discover and explore the diversity of translated children’s literature.

The children will have the opportunity to:
- Enjoy a fun and interactive activity, working to create a page from New Zealand book My Village.
- Explore books that they would never normally see. Developing an awareness of books from other countries, and use books as a way to celebrate and explore cultural, personal and local identities
- Develop a story from an illustration out of My Village

See reviews for My Village.
