Southland Multicultural Council Inc

Southland Multicultural Council (formerly Southland Multi-Nations Council) provides a meeting place and a voice for members of Southland’s diverse ethnic groups. Our organisation works closely with Settlement Support, English Language Partners Southland Inc. (formerly ESOL Home Tutors (Southland) and Southern Institute of Technology as well as other community organisations.
The Council employs a part-time coordinator, Violet Stewart, and has an office in Southland Community House, Invercargill with information about services for those new to New Zealand, in particular Southland and Invercargill. Our organisation is here not only to help new immigrants but also those who have been here a long time.

Mission Statement: “To promote and protect the interests of ethnic people in Southland.”

The aims of the Council are to:

Promote and celebrate cultural diversity in our community.
Promote and maintain unity and share experiences and friendship among members and other communities in New Zealand.
Enable ethnic groups to give each other mutual support and strength to deal with issues which affect them.
Raise consciousness among ethnic groups of the special status of Māori as tangata whenua and their special rights under the Treaty of Waitangi.
The Council is affiliated to the New Zealand Federation of Multicultural Councils and participates in the Federation’s annual meetings, which allow ethnic people from around the country to meet and discuss shared items of concern.
