Waitaki Multicultural Council Inc

Waitaki Multicultural Council Inc was formed in May 2008 in Oamaru. We have over 50 different ethnic groups living in the Waitaki District. Our activities include monthly potluck meal of ethnic food to share and to get to know each other. Participating in citizenship ceremonies and welcoming new citizens. We provide links and information about the community. Monthly women’s group provide support and networking. In 2012 we will be part of the Newcomers Network to help newcomers coming into the District from other regions and countries. We have a Migrant Services Coordinator to assist newcomers to settle well in the wider community. As an organisation that promotes cultural diversity, positive race relations, we are here to serve the community and proud to support the Diversity Action Programme. Race Relations Day Celebrations Event is an event we look forward to and involves and engages the community in celebrating Cultural Diversity.

  • Essay Contest based on the theme for High Schools and Youth with sponsored prizes.
  • Poster Competition for primary/intermediate schools and prizes for participation.
  • Art Gallery Display of Cultural Items, to encourage Youth to submit art on what cultural diversity means to them.
  • Museum Display of cultural items
  • Library – promoting the theme and cultural awareness.
Multicultural Concert

Waitaki Multicultural Council Inc will celebrate Race relations Day with a multicultural concert on Saturday 31March from 7pm at the Oamaru Opera House, Thames Street, Oamaru.

Tickets are $6 Adults and $2 for children. Performers from the community and outside of the district will be performing and sharing their different cultures, schools are included. This is an affordable family event that is held at the beautiful and restored Opera House.
