Former Chief Executive Cynthia Brophy

Cynthia Brophy took up the role of Chief Executive of the Human Rights Commission in early 2015 and finished at the end of 2018.

Cynthia was general manager of People and Corporate Relations for Transpower. She left Transpower after eight years in July 2014. The span of her role encompassed all aspects of human resources management, corporate and government relations, and community and stakeholder relations.  With respect to the latter, she created the Transpower community strategy and established the Transpower Community Care Fund. 

She has extensive experience in the financial services sector, working as a General Manager for Corporate Affairs for the National Bank and ANZ Bank. She held the position of General Manager of Public Affairs at Airways Corporation, and was the Communications Manager at Internal Affairs and then at Justice. She was also the Communications Manager and Head of Public Affairs for the New Zealand Red Cross Society.

Cynthia graduated with a BA and MA in English (Hons) from the Illinois State University.
