Australians show solidarity with Muslims online

December 16, 2014

In the wake of the tragedy that unfolded in Sydney, a single tweet and one small act of kindness towards a Muslim woman, inspired an online movement which saw thousands of people take a take a stand against anti-Muslim sentiment.

The hashtag #illridewithyou, which has gone viral, saw social media users offer to ride on public transport with Muslims who felt intimidated by some of the anti-Muslim rhetoric that arose yesterday.

In moments of heightened fear and uncertainty this kind of public support can have the effect of revealing our shared humanity and making communities stronger.

The chart below maps the growth of the #illridewithyou hashtag in real time.
