The Commission’s new Chief Executive, Cynthia Brophy, started on 15 January 2015.
Cynthia has been working at general management level for over 20 years and has had major roles in both the private and public sectors.
Cynthia’s strengths are in building relations with community, government and business, and effective organisational management. Cynthia’s most recent role was general manager of People and Corporate Relations for Transpower. She left Transpower after eight years in July 2014 after the national grid upgrade programme was completed.
The span of her role encompassed all aspects of human resources management, corporate and government relations, and community and stakeholder relations. With respect to the latter, she created the Transpower community strategy and established the Transpower Community Care Fund.
She also worked in the financial services sector as a General Manager for Corporate Affairs for the National Bank and ANZ Bank. She held the position of General Manager of Public Affairs at Airways Corporation, and was the Communications Manager at Internal Affairs and then at Justice.
She was also the Communications Manager and Head of Public Affairs for the New Zealand Red Cross Society.
Cynthia graduated with a BA and MA in English (Hons) from the Illinois State University.
