It may surprise a few of you to know that a large number of places in New Zealand are Māori words. This years Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori (Māori Language Week) has made it abundantly clear that far too many of us are still mispronouncing these names.

The Wireless have compiled a list of a few commonly mispronounced place names that you should master. To learn more you can also listen to the recording at the top of the page. 

Remuera - re-moo-ear-a

Timaru - tee-mah-roo

Taupo - toe-paw

Tauranga - toe-rung-a

Akaroa - ah-car-oh-a

Motueka - more-two-aye-car

Matamata - mutter-mutter

Manukau - mar-nook-oh

Kaikoura - kai-co-rah

Oamaru - oh-ar-ma-roo
