It may surprise a few of you to know that a large number of places in New Zealand are Māori words. This years Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori (Māori Language Week) has made it abundantly clear that far too many of us are still mispronouncing these names.

Motueka - more-two-aye-car
Matamata - mutter-mutter

Kaikoura - kai-co-rah
Oamaru - oh-ar-ma-roo
