New Zealand is the first country in the world to develop an official standard addressing rainbow inclusive workplaces. The Human Rights Commission is one of a number of organisations on track to receive its own Rainbow Tick of approval.
The New Zealand Standard 8200 Rainbow-Inclusive workplaces: A standard for gender and sexual diversity in employment is designed to help organisations to be inclusive of diverse sexual orientations and gender identities.
The Standard applies to an organisation’s interactions with and between its staff, customers, clients and members. Currently, eleven New Zealand organisations and companies are accredited with the Rainbow Tick including Simpson Grierson, Coca-cola Amatil, ASB, ANZ, Westpac, and Sovereign.
The Commission and a number of other organisations are now in the process of becoming accredited by Rainbow Tick, who are mandated by the NZ Standards Authority. Rainbow Tick also offer a parallel accreditation process, which see businesses awarded with a ‘tick’ as a confidence mark.
Throughout the accreditation process, the Commission has both identified our demonstrated commitment to gender and sexual diversity, as well as a couple of areas for improvement, which are currently being worked on.

Diversity & Inclusion training is not about political correctness – it’s about appreciating the skills, knowledge and personal attributes of everyone we work with. It’s about being able to connect better with colleagues and customers by understanding things from their point of view and appreciating that difference brings richness, and some challenges for us all. A truly diverse and inclusive environment is directly linked to enhanced performance and strengthened brand reputation.
In practice, the Commission demonstrates a commitment to gender and sexual diversity. We regularly address sexual orientation, gender identity and intersex (SOGII) issues through the inquiries and complaints process, our work programme involves activity relating to these issues, our recruitment processes favour diverse and we have a workforce that is inclusive of lesbian, gay, bisexual identified staff and Commissioners.
We have also committed to a Human Rights Policy Statement that states, among other things, that we value diversity and do not discriminate by reason of gender and sexual orientation.
