Treaty of Waitangi UMR Research Report: 2008

UMR Research conducted a research report on the perceptions of the Treaty of Waitangi, perceptions of discrimination, and lastly the numbers of New Zealanders with a dsiability which stopsthem from doing everyday activities. The fist two measures had been tracked and reported on by UMR on behalf of the Human Rights Commission since the early 2000's.

The Key findings of the report: 

  • Declared knowledge of the Treaty was down to 34% in 2008. This was the lowest level since tracking began.
  • 47% of Maori felt that they had a reasonably high level of Treaty knowledge. This was also down on the previous year.
  • 59% of respondents agreed that the Treaty is New Zealand's founding document.
  • 57% of respondents agreed that the Treaty is for all New Zealanders.
  • 40% agreed that the Treaty relationship between the Crown and Maori is healthy.
